Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are infections that are spread through vaginal, anal and oral sex. These diseases can be spread when mucous membrane or open sores are in contact with vagina discharge, sperm, pre-ejaculation fluid, or blood. STDs can be without symptoms for years, however they are still infectious. Untreated STDs can lead to a number of consequences, such as infertility (in men and women), several different infections and problems in joints. Also the partner of the infected person should be treated. Untreated STDs also increase the risk of HIV infection.

Using a condom is the only way to protect yourself from STDs!

If you have had unprotected sex, and you would like to know if you have been infected with an STD, or you have symptoms, you should contact your local health care center. Other places for testing and information are student and occupational health services and private clinics.

STD testing should be done one week after the risk situation, except HIV and hepatitis testing. They should be done 3 months after possible exposure. Most of the public health services are free of charge, and in many times treatment and medication are free.
